Suspect Trafficked 46 Foreign Women into China, made ¥1.33 Million.
Another case of human trafficking in China
Hello dear readers,
How are you?
Human trafficking has become increasingly prevalent in China in recent years—a crisis made worse by the country's gender imbalance caused by the one-child policy of the past. With fewer women in the population, criminal networks have taken advantage of this disparity, targeting vulnerable groups for forced marriage and labor.

On April 17, the Supreme People's Procuratorate released a statement noting that in recent years, demand for matchmaking services has been steadily increasing, but this has also led to the emergence of various illegal and criminal activities. From January 2024 to March 2025, prosecutors handled cases involving 1,546 individuals related to crimes in the matchmaking industry.
Investigations revealed that some individuals exploited matchmaking as a cover for fraud. A few matchmaking agencies have illegally engaged in foreign-related matchmaking services, and some dating websites have even become platforms that funnel traffic to criminal operations, underscoring the urgent need for regulation and enforcement.
Illegal Foreign Matchmaking Activities
Some matchmaking agencies have been illegally conducting cross-border matchmaking services. According to regulations, domestic matchmaking agencies and any other organizations are strictly prohibited from engaging in or indirectly engaging in foreign-related matchmaking.
To earn high intermediary fees, certain agencies and individuals have:
Falsified reasons such as business visits or tourism to help people obtain visas and go abroad to meet foreign partners.
Arranged for foreigners to enter China on short-term visas, or even facilitated illegal entry (e.g., through smuggling), to participate in matchmaking activities.
Criminal Cases Handled
In one case, Huang and three others were involved in trafficking women and rape. The suspects posted advertisements for international matchmaking on online platforms, taking clients abroad to select “brides” or bringing the “brides” into China for clients to choose from.
In another case, Zhu was prosecuted for organizing others to illegally cross the border. Zhu operated a matchmaking service center and promoted international marriage introductions through social media, conducting 12 illegal cross-border matchmaking operations.
In a particularly egregious case, Wan was charged with trafficking women, organizing illegal border crossings, and fraud. Wan trafficked 46 foreign women into China. Despite knowing that some of them were already in de facto marriages, he repeatedly "married them off" to single men in different regions, earning 1.33 million yuan through this scheme.
The future is already here in China, but the past still holds the keys.
